Groupon Reports $638.3M In Q4 Revenue, Shares Drop More Than 20 Percent Due To Worse-Than-Expected Loss

groupon logoGroupon has just put out its Q4 and full-year results. It has reported quarterly revenue of $638.8 million with an operating loss of $12.9 million and a loss per per share of 12 cents, falling short of?analyst expectations on the EPS front ? they had predicted $638.41 million in revenue and EPS of $0.03. Those numbers show 30 percent revenue growth and a slightly smaller ($12.9 million versus $15 million) operating loss compared to the same period last year. (Those Q4 results needed to be restated about a month after reporting because Groupon had higher-than-expected refunds, due to selling more expensive products and having customers make more returns of those goods.)

TECH TIME REVIEW: 8X is best Windows Phone offering yet, but app and storage limitations hold it back

Overall screen size on the Windows Phone 8X is 4.3 inches, not as big as some of the new phones coming out, but big enough for most people. It?s a size that fits quite comfortably in the hand, and allows for one hand typing on the on-screen keyboard.

The resolution on the phone is 720p, so it?s HD but not 1080p full-HD like some other new phones.

Corning Gorilla Glass 2 helps keep your screen safe from damage.

Operating system

As the name might indicate, the Windows Phone 8X runs the Windows 8 operating system.

While I wasn?t too big on the new crop of Windows Phone offerings when they first came out a couple years back, I must admit that Windows 8, especially the tile setup out front that gives you quick access to your favorite apps and features, and live updating tiles, is starting to grow on me. Once you figure out how to use it and make your most common features quickly accessible, it?s as easy to use as most Android or Apple phone offerings.

The other nice feature about Windows Phone devices is their strong integration with other Microsoft products (such as Outlook, Office, OneNote, SharePoint,SkyDrive, Xbox), if you are invested in the Microsoft ecosystem.

For those of you with kids who like to use your phone, a feature called Kid?s Corner gives them access only to the aspects of the phone you choose to give them access to.

If you?re into cloud storage of your files, SkyDrive keeps your items online and they are accessible from any device that can access the Internet.

APPS Continued...

NETWORK, CALLS

You get access to Verizon?s 4G LTE network on the Windows Phone 8X, and the download and upload speeds are super snappy as usual.

Phone calls that I made were clean, which no dropped calls, and little noise or interference.

For messaging, the on-screen keyboard is responsive, but was a little too tiny for my tastes, especially when held vertically (horizontal was more manageable even for larger fingers).

CAMERA

One of the camera features that I like the most on the Windows Phone 8X is more of a design feature -- and that is the button on the side of the phone that works as a camera shutter.

That dedicated camera button is much better than what I?ve seen on many phones where they want you to tap the screen to take a picture. That just isn?t natural with how we are trained to take pictures. So I like the dedicated button.

You get a 8MP auto-focus rear?facing camera with flash, and photos were decent -- though not the best I?ve seen on newer smartphones. Sharing your photos to social networking sites on online storage like Skydrive is very easy.

The front-facing camera is 2.1 megapixels, and features an 88-degree ultra?wide angle; this is used primarily for video chat or self-portraits; and again, it?s nothing too special.

One thing I do like about the camera is how you can instantly launch the camera, even from a locked screen, by pressing the shutter button on the side of your phone -- so a shorter delay before shooting.

In terms of video, both the front and rear cameras can record in 1080p HD quality.

MUSIC

Like almost all of HTC?s new phones, the Windows Phone 8X features Beats Audio, which aims to improve the overall sound quality.

It?s a decent improvement, but is only really noticeable when listening via headphones. Out loud, a cell phone is still going to sound like a cell phone.

OTHER FEATURES

? The phone is global ready

? You can use data and voice simultaneously

? For an extra monthly fee, you can use the phone as a Mobile Hotspot, with support for up to 8 Devices on 3G or 4G

? NFC allows for Tap and Share of files with other NFC devices

? Voice commands: Make a call, launch an app, send a text, take a note, find something online

PRICE

The Windows Phone 8X will cost you $99.99 with a 2-year contract from Verizon, or $549.99 without contract.

BOTTOM LINE

The Windows Phone 8X is a fast and easy-to-use phone, and probably the best Windows Phone that has been released to date.

But it lacks in some key areas and is not as great as it needs to be to truly compete against phones like the Samsung Galaxy phones or iPhones.

It will find some fans, particularly those who are big fans of the Windows Phone OS as compared to Apple or Android. And maybe some people new to smartphones who don?t yet have a favorite system might go for it.

But with no real standout features that puts it above those competitors, there?s no way it can expect to be a big hit and make a major impact on the smartphone market overall.

In the grand scheme of the smartphone world, Windows Phones still make up a very small percentage of the overall market.

But that hasn?t stopped Microsoft from continuing to improve on their phone offerings on the various carriers, and this year there have been several offerings aimed at raising the profile of the Windows Phone ecosystem, as they try to dent the market domination of Apple and Android phones.

One such offering from Verizon Wireless is the new Windows Phone 8X by HTC, which I recently had the chance to test.

I?m back with a full report of what it offers compared to its smartphone competition.

LOOKS

One demand that smartphone buyers today have is that their phones are thin and light. Gone are the thick, heavy phones of the past, and even big-screen phones are low in the ounce count these days.

Windows Phone 8X delivers in this department, with dimensions of 5.21 (H) x 2.61 (W) x 0.40 (D) inches. The weight is 4.66 oz.

My test phone was an attractive blue color on the back and on the front border, but there are also black and red options from Verizon if that suits your tastes more.

The rubbery material on the back of the phone provides a decent grip, and overall, while it?s not the sturdiest of all smartphones, it?s still well-made and should withstand the usual amount of abuse and spills a phone might take.

Display

Overall screen size on the Windows Phone 8X is 4.3 inches, not as big as some of the new phones coming out, but big enough for most people. It?s a size that fits quite comfortably in the hand, and allows for one hand typing on the on-screen keyboard.

The resolution on the phone is 720p, so it?s HD but not 1080p full-HD like some other new phones.

If you?re into cloud storage of your files, SkyDrive keeps your items online and they are accessible from any device that can access the Internet.

APPS

The biggest knock on Windows Phone offerings that helps keep down the food chain in smartphones is the apps gap. Basically, that means that, in my view, Microsoft?s store for apps comes nowhere near what is offered by Apple and Android, leaving users frustrated with the offerings they have to choose from. This will continue to be a main problem for Microsoft, and is a byproduct of them being late to step up their game in the smartphone arena while their competitors soared.

PROCESSOR, STORAGE

No complaints here, as the 1.5GHz dual?core processor and 1GB of RAM keep the phone humming along without delays. Web browsing, game play and other duties on the phone were not a burden on the system.

In terms of storage, you get 16GB of internal memory, but there is no way to upgrade. This will be a concern for people who like to store a lot of apps and large files on their phone, as the room will go away very quickly.

BATTERY LIFE

The Windows Phone 8X and its 1800 mAh Li?Ion battery do a solid job of keeping the phone running, as it got me through each day.

The concern, though, is that the battery is nonremovable, meaning that you don?t have the option to carry a spare in case you?re going to be unable to charge it for a longer period of time.

WIRELESS CHARGING

The good news: This phone features the ability to do wireless charging.

The bad news: Wireless charging port sold separately, which is disappointing.

Is Pandora radio? Why the question still matters | Radio Survivor

The folks in marketing and research are getting tired of the ?Is Pandora radio? debate, it seems. But I still think the question matters. First, here is what they are saying, followed by why I disagree with their premises.

Denial is not a river in Egypt poster. In early January Sean Ross over at Edison Research chided the broadcast industry for ?denial? about Spotify and Pandora.

?Radio?s strategy for selling itself as an industry over the past few years hinged on two dubious strategies,? he wrote. ?One was reminding investors and advertisers that radio is still widely cumed and just hoping that nobody asks about time spent listening. The other was to enthusiastically assail Pandora, Spotify and other competing forms of audio as ?not radio?.?

Furthermore:

?Had existing broadcasters claimed personalized radio as part of their industry sooner, they could have displayed a robust and expanding product line that increased the usage of programmed audio, even if it did not leave existing radio listening untouched. With a TSL [time spent listening] decrease impossible to hide anymore, the ratcheting down of the anti-Pandora rhetoric seems to acknowledge a late willingness to co-opt other forms of programmed audio.?

Then the Mark Ramsey media blog posted an interview with?Mike Agovino of Triton Digital, ?the company at the leading edge of audio?s digital transformation and monetization.?

?The notion that Spotify, Pandora or any on-demand service is the ?enemy? of ?radio? makes no sense,? Agovino explained:

?Did FM prove to be the ?enemy? or a ?friend? back in the 1960?s? The revenue that has left the broadcast radio industry since 2006 has disproportionately gone to Google and Facebook, not to Spotify and Pandora! I would actually argue that these kinds of services are helping to protect audio?s place in the advertising ecosystem as they give marketers a reason to believe audio will evolve to become more targeted and accountable ? this is a critical point.

Whether a product is or isn?t ?radio? doesn?t matter any more than whether a product is or isn?t ?newspaper? or is or isn?t ?TV.? Marketers are following the consumer and the consumer is blending their time between offline and online media with a constant uptick towards online. Ad budgets will continue to slant in the online direction as audience builds and they make better use of available data and precision targeting capability.?

Obviously, if your definition of ?radio? is something that streams audio in some agreed upon format and makes (or could make) somebody money, then Pandora and Spotify are radio and the debate is resolved. Heck, YouTube is radio. And by that standard, my emailing you or posting an .mp3 or .wav file of me singing ?Teddy Bear?s Picnic? and including a link to my Paypal account might be radio. As the man said in Citizen Kane, making money is easy if that?s all you want to do.

But if radio is about bringing people together, making our cities and neighborhoods more connected places, exciting us with live and local music, and challenging us with real time information, dialogue, and debate, then sorry, Spotify and Pandora mostly don?t qualify as radio.

How do I define ?radio?? Jennifer Waits and I will be attending the ?What is Radio? conference in Portland this April. Here is the tentative definition that I will bring to the gathering:

?Radio is the presentation of music, actuality, and talk over standardized streaming audio formats in a real time context.?

Music, meaning music; actuality, meaning prerecorded samples of life sounds; talk, meaning words spoken by and between human beings; streaming formats, meaning AM/FM, Internet, or other venues; and in real time, otherwise known as ?live?.

What is Radio conference banner - the University of Oregon at Portland.

Conference starts on April 25

What do I mean by ?context?? I mean it doesn?t have to be live all the time. But it has to be real time a lot of the time?live enough, real time enough?that you associate everything streaming on your radio station as an immediate experience, as making an effort to communicate with you now.

This is what makes radio ?radio??giving us the experience of moving through time together while hearing the same sounds and sharing our individual interpretations of those sounds with each other. Radio, at its best, at its most human, de-fragments our social experience.

Some online social-networking music sites fulfill this mission, I think, most notably turntable.fm and Jelli. But?Pandora and Spotify, for all their virtues, don?t. They?re great individualized services, but I would classify them more as juke box than as radio. To be fair, a lot of what comes out of the Clear Channel automated AM/FM universe isn?t radio either, but that?s no consolation.

Feel free to disagree with my definition and analysis, but christening Pandora and Spotify as radio simply because they represent effective business models end runs bigger and more personal questions about what we want or need from the medium. The question still matters. The debate is still on.

Caltech president Chameau to resign, will lead King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

PASADENA - Caltech president Jean-Lou Chameau plans to resign and move to a university in Saudi Arabia, he said Tuesday in a letter to the Caltech community.

Chameau, a native of France who has led Caltech since 2006, plans to leave sometime later this year, according to a Caltech news release.

"President Chameau has served Caltech with excellence and distinction, stimulating innovation and expanding resources for high-risk, high-reward research," Caltech board of trustees chair David Lee said in a statement.

Chameau will become president of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, which began enrolling students in 2009. His wife, Carol Carmichael, will also resign from Caltech, where she was involved in numerous projects including a sustainability initiative.

"Until recently, Carol and I believed we would complete our careers at Caltech and retire in Pasadena," Chameau said in his statement. "It would be difficult not to feel that way when working in such a special place and community. We did not expect, however, to be presented with a unique and life-changing opportunity: to lead the recently created King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

"As I considered accepting the position at KAUST and as I spoke with individuals involved in its founding, I was struck by the attention paid to establishing a culture of excellence, and how its planning had been influenced by great institutions from

around the world, including Caltech."

Sonya Burgess, the head coach for the Kingstree High School girls basketball team, was killed in a car crash Monday night according to Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight.

Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that happened about 6:32 p.m. on?Highway 52 near Cades Road in the Cades community of Williamsburg County at the intersection of Highway 52 and Cades Crossroads, according to Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant.

Currently Highway Patrol believes two other cars were involved in the crash that both left the scene. They do not have descriptions of the vehicles, but are reviewing surveillance video to identify the vehicles.

Troopers believe?one vehicle pulled out of a gas station close to the scene of the crash and traveled?north in the?southbound lane of Highway 52.

Burgess was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition traveling south on?Highway 52, said Wyant.

Burgess swerved to the right to avoid a head on collision with the unknown vehicle. Troopers believe Burgess then overcorrected to the left and flipped the Expedition on the roadway, said Wyant.

Burgess was able to get out of the SUV and was on the roadway when troopers believe a second unknown vehicle traveling?northbound?hit Burgess as she was in the roadway, said Wyant.

The second unknown vehicle also left the scene, said Wyant.

The MAIT Team is investigating?and trying to?come up with?descriptions of the?other?vehicles.

Burgess was driving the car with three children inside. The children were taken to Williamsburg Regional Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

NFL Draft 2013: Mike Mayock, Mel Kiper Differ on Positional Rankings

Mike Mayock's rankings of prospects by position have a number of substantial differences with Mel Kiper's.

It's a few short days until the NFL Scouting Combine begins, and just over two months until the NFL Draft. As such, all the draftniks are putting out mock drafts and rankings of players at each position and overall. Today, we examine two of the most well-known draft analysts and how their position rankings differ.

Mike Mayock of the NFL Network has quietly become a great dual-threat for that network: an excellent color commentator, and a great talent evaluator for their NFL Draft coverage. Mayock recently released his rankings of the top five prospects at each position.

Mel Kiper is of course the walking oil slick and head draft evaluator over at ESPN, and he also has a big board of top prospects by position posted (Insider only, however). We'll take a quick look at how their rankings differ on some of the main positions of interest to the Green Bay Packers as they work through draft season.

Running Back:
Both agree on Eddie Lacy of Alabama as the top back, while Montee Ball is in the top three for both of them (Mayock 2, Kiper 3). However, Mayock has Andre Ellington of Clemson as his third-ranked back, while Kiper has him nowhere to be found. Ellington is a speedy back who had a productive career at Clemson, but he has durability issues.

Wide Receiver:
Both analysts share four of their top five prospects, but Terrance Williams makes an appearance at number three on Mayock's board while being left off Kiper's entirely. Williams had a good senior bowl and plays very fast, even at 6'2".

Tight End:
The big surprise here is that Gavin Escobar from San Diego State is third on Mayock's board. Escobar is a definite receiving weapon, and could be seen similarly to how Jermichael Finley was coming out of college: as a raw, physical receiving threat who could grow into a game-changing tight end.

Defensive Tackle:
Kiper has stuck with most other analysts who put Star Lotulelei as the top tackle available, with Sheldon Richardson of Missouri and Sharrif Floyd of Florida rounding out the top three. Mayock has Floyd at the top instead. It's unlikely though that any of these players will be available at 26th overall.

Outside Linebacker:
It's fascinating to me that Kiper still classifies some players as defensive ends when it's all but certain that they'll end up as linebackers in a 3-4 system. Dion Jordan of Oregon and Barkevious Mingo of LSU are two of those players, who Mayock lists at OLB instead. Surprisingly, Mayock puts Jordan ahead of Jarvis Jones from Georgia and puts Mingo fourth, while Kiper had MIngo listed higher than Jordan at defensive end.

Those are the biggest positions of difference between the two television analysts. Do you strongly disagree with one or the other on any particular position?

Long-missing WWII medal to be awarded

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Hyla Merin grew up without a father and for a long time never knew why.

Her mother never spoke about the Army officer who died before Hyla was born. The scraps of information she gathered from other relatives were hazy: 2nd Lt. Hyman Markel was a rabbi's son, brilliant at mathematics, the brave winner of a Purple Heart who died sometime in 1945.

Aside from wedding photos of Markel in uniform, Merin never glimpsed him.

But on Sunday, decades after he won it, Merin will receive her father's Purple Heart, along with a Silver Star she never knew he'd won and a half-dozen other medals.

"It just confirms what a great man he was," Merin said tearfully. "He gave up his life for our country and our freedom. I'll put it up in my house as a memorial to him and to those who served."

Merin's mother, Celia, married Markel in 1941 when he already was in the military. They met at a Jewish temple in Buffalo, N.Y.

About four months ago, the manager of a West Hollywood apartment building where Merin's mother lived in the 1960s found a box containing papers and the Purple Heart while cleaning out some lockers in the laundry room, Merin said.

The manager contacted Purple Hearts Reunited, a nonprofit organization that returns lost or stolen medals to vets or their families.

A search led to Merin, who lives in Westlake Village, a community straddling the Ventura and Los Angeles county lines.

She became "kind of emotional, because I don't have a lot of pictures, I don't have a lot of stories, and I've always been a crier," she said. "My mother was always the stoic one, very strong."

Markel was killed on May 3, 1945, in Italy's Po Valley while fighting German troops as an officer with the 88th Division of the 351st Infantry Regiment, said Zachariah Fike, the Vermont Army National Guard captain who founded Purple Hearts Reunited.

"The accounts suggest that he was out on patrol and he got ambushed and he charged ahead and basically took out a machine gun position to save the rest of his guys," said Fike, whose organization has returned some two dozen medals. "For that, he paid the ultimate sacrifice."

He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star posthumously, but for some reason the family never was told about the Silver Star and it was never sent to them, Fike said.

Merin's mother never talked in detail to her daughter about Markel.

"It was a very difficult topic for her. When my father died, she was seven months pregnant with me," Merin said.

Her mother briefly remarried when Merin was 10 but her stepfather died three years later, Merin said.

Her mother moved into the apartment in 1960 and may have placed the Purple Heart in the locker then, Merin said. Her mother lived there until 1975 before moving away, and Merin's aunt lived there until 2005. Another aunt lived there until 2009.

They never spoke about what was in the locker, and the family must have missed the box when they took away the aunts' possessions in 2005 and 2009, Merin said.

Merin said that in addition to the Purple Heart, which Pike kept for framing, the box contained letters and other papers, and her father's Jewish prayer book.

"I found it very hard to look at. A lot of them were condolence letters," she said.

Merin's mother was told about the discovery of the Purple Heart but didn't live to see receive it ? she died Feb. 1 at age 94.
