Retain Customers with Idea Management System | Computers and ...

As Peter Drucker, the management consultant, has rightly said, ??The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.? and ?The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.? Hence, the CPG or FMCG companies must be always on their toes in order to retain their customers. However, the fact of the matter is to retain customers what is needed is not empty gimmicks but new and innovative products. And for innovative products, what is required is innovative thinking and ideas. Instead of a few people coming up with ideas and suggestions, what is required is an idea management system that makes it possible for the people in the supply chain to contribute cost, time and process improvement related ideas.

It is when more minds work actively together for a common objective that better ideas happen. Take for instance, ITC, a tobacco, food, and Hotel Corporation, found an innovative way to boost its food processing and export operations by tapping an untapped sector- Agriculture. It started an initiative of providing ITC-designed, Hindi-language Web pages that provided district specific weather reports, the market price of soybeans and wheat and tips on modern growing methods ?for farmers to increase their yields and ?along the way they hoped to push products ranging from tractors to hair oil to increasingly prosperous farmers. ITC succeeded thanks to the collective effort of its employees, customers, and suppliers.

Similarly, the CPG or FMCG companies must encourage employees, clients and customers to suggest ideas and suggestions for improving customer satisfaction. Since it is very difficult to gather ideas and suggestions from those concerned individually, enterprises must invest in ideation software to ease idea management implementation. Let?s see how.

Ideation software helps to

* Record total number of ideas generated

* Categorize the ideas into unique categories

* Assign and assess the viability and relevance of an idea

* Give credit to contributor of original as well as effective ideas

This brings in healthy competition among the people in the supply chain as people compete to come up with new and innovative ways to retain customers. Hence, in today?s volatile business environment, the CPG or FMCG companies must deploy idea management system to come out with new and innovative products on a regular basis, thereby retaining customers, and ensuring customer loyalty.

BlackBerry service down in Europe, Mideast, Africa

TORONTO (AP) ? Struggling BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion said Friday it resolved an outage affecting users in Europe, Middle East and Africa that had interrupted service for customers on the very day Apple Inc. unveiled its new iPhone 5.

BlackBerry announced the issues in postings on Facebook and Twitter on Friday, and said it fixed the troubles after a few hours. It apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused.

The outage brought up unpleasant memories of last year's troubles with emails and chat messages that left many users bereft for up to three days.

The timing could not have been worse, coming as lines formed outside of Apple stores in a number of cities as the new iPhone 5 went on sale.

RIM spokeswoman Amy Jones said the outage was limited to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Jones did not have details on what caused it.

"It's the worst timing," Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said. "This is bad publicity and it's very unfortunate. But frankly the attention is all going to be on Apple today, all the weekend and frankly until the end of the year. Frankly, it's kind of irrelevant. The only thing that's relevant is when they are going to come out with their new phones."

Misek said he thinks the transition to the BlackBerry 10 software intended to run their new line of smartphones, could be a cause of the outage. RIM is preparing to launch the new phones early next year, after a series of delays.

"We think that switch over is causing the difficulties," Misek said.

The latest outage comes as customers are abandoning their BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.

RIM was once Canada's most valuable company with a market value of more than $80 billion in June 2008, but the stock has plummeted since, from over $140 share to around $7. Shares traded down 1.5 percent, or 30 cents, to $6.80 in premarket trading on the Nasdaq. RIM's decline is evoking memories of Nortel, another Canadian tech giant, which declared bankruptcy in 2009.

Humongous Roman mosaic found under farmer's field in Turkey

So far, the researchers have revealed about 40 percent of the mosaic. The floor is in 'pristine' condition, and?would have fronted an open-air marble swimming pool flanked by porticos.

A giant poolside mosaic featuring intricate geometric patterns has been unearthed in southern Turkey, revealing the far-reaching influence of the Roman Empire at its peak.

The?mosaic, which once decorated the floor of a bath complex, abuts a 25-foot (7-meter)-long pool, which would have been open to the air, said Michael Hoff, a University of Nebraska, Lincoln art historian and director of the mosaic excavation. The find likely dates to the third or fourth century, Hoff said. The mosaic itself is an astonishing 1,600 square feet (149 square meters) ? the size of a modest family home. ?

"To be honest, I was completely bowled over that the mosaic is that big," Hoff told LiveScience. [See Photos of the Roman Mosaic]

The first hint that something stunning lay underground in southern Turkey came in 2002, when Purdue University classics professor Nick Rauh walked through a freshly-plowed farmer's field near?the ancient city?of Antiochia ad Cragum. The plow had churned up bits of mosaic tile, Hoff said. Rauh consulted other archaeologists, including experts at the local museum in Alanya, Turkey. The museum did not have funds to excavate more than a sliver of the mosaic, so archaeologists left the site alone.

Last year, with a new archaeological permit for the site in hand, museum archaeologists invited Hoff and his team to complete the dig.

So far, the researchers have revealed about 40 percent of the mosaic. The floor is in "pristine" condition, Hoff said in a university?video about the dig. It would have fronted an open-air marble swimming pool flanked by porticos.

The mosaic itself is composed of large squares, each sporting a unique geometric design on a white background, from starburst patterns to intertwined loops. It's the largest Roman mosaic ever found in southern Turkey, which was thought to be rather peripheral to the?Roman Empire, according to Hoff. The existence of the mosaic suggests that Antiochia ad Cragum was far more influenced by the Romans than believed, Hoff said.

The city of Antiochia ad Cragum, founded in the first century, has a number of Roman features, including bathhouses and markets.

Hoff's team has also been excavating a third-century?Roman temple?in the city and a street lined with colonnades and shops.?? ?

The team will return with students and volunteers to complete the mosaic excavations in June 2013. Ultimately, Hoff said, the plan is to construct a wooden shelter over the entire mosaic and open the site to public visits.

Italy court upholds "rendition" convictions on ex-CIA agents

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's highest court on Wednesday upheld guilty verdicts on 23 Americans for the kidnapping of an Egyptian Muslim cleric, in the first criminal convictions for CIA "rendition" flights during the U.S. 'war on terror'.

The Americans - 22 CIA agents and one Air Force pilot - who are believed to be in the United States and were tried in their absence - are unlikely to serve their sentences. But they will be unable to travel to Europe without risking arrest.

Italy has never requested their extradition.

All of the Americans were sentenced to 7 years jail by a lower court except former CIA Milan station chief Robert Seldon Lady, who was handed a nine-year sentence.

Italy's highest appeals court, or Court of Cassation, also said five senior Italian secret service agents could be tried for the abduction, overturning a previous ruling barring a trial on the grounds it would reveal state secrets.

The five are the former head of Italy's Sismi military intelligence agency Nicolo Pollari, who resigned over the affair, his deputy and three others.

Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, an Egyptian imam known as Abu Omar, was snatched from a Milan street in 2003 and flown to Egypt for interrogation, where he says he was tortured for seven months. He was resident in Italy at the time of the abduction.

The Italian trial was the first of its kind against the "rendition" flights practiced by the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush, which have been condemned by human rights groups as a violation of international agreements.

Under the rendition program, the CIA is alleged to have abducted terrorism suspects and flown them to countries where they could be tortured, a practice banned under international law.
