When You Sit Down, Does Your Ass Actually Touch the Chair?

There's a hackneyed scientific description of what it means to touch things: your ass never actually "touches" a chair when you sit down, so it goes, but instead is repelled because of electrons that come up against each other. But is that really the case? More »

S&P 500 ends higher for fourth session in light volume

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks finished modestly higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 up for a fourth session although trading volume was one of the year's lowest on the day ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Investors welcomed news that a ceasefire was declared to end the flare-up in violence between Israel and the Palestinians, though the lack of a deal to release emergency aid for Greece limited the market's advance.

Investors also remained anxious about the mandatory tax increases and spending cuts that would go into effect in the new year if a deal is not reached to prevent it - known as the "fiscal cliff" - though policymakers are not expected to get back to negotiations until after Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.

About 4.6 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with year-to-date daily average volume of 6.5 billion shares. On Thursday, the U.S. stock market will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, and on Friday, it will close early at 1 p.m. (1800 GMT).

"Usually on patriotic holidays, which I think Thanksgiving is one, we often see a rally on a light volume. So I wouldn't be surprised if we see that on Friday, if there is no major news," said J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

"So far this week, we have heard good news in terms of (the) fiscal cliff. Both sides seem to be playing nice, but we will start to see big day-to-day swings (in the market) from next week, when we get more details."

Greece's international lenders failed again to reach a deal to release emergency aid to the debt-saddled country. Lenders will try again next Monday, but Germany signaled that significant divisions remain.

A truce between Israel and Hamas gave stocks some support around midday after Egypt announced a ceasefire would come into effect later in the day.

Fears that the fiscal cliff discussions in Washington could be drawn out or yield no resolution have been at the forefront of investors' minds in recent weeks. Combined with concerns about the euro zone's continued debt problems, the worries had driven a sell-off that has taken more than 5 percent off the S&P 500 since Election Day in early November.

Positive comments from U.S. politicians that they will work to find common ground have helped the S&P 500 recoup some of that loss in recent sessions.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 48.38 points, or 0.38 percent, to 12,836.89 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 3.22 points, or 0.23 percent, to 1,391.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 9.87 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 2,926.55.

St Jude Medical shares tumbled 12.2 percent to $31.37 after an inspection report from health regulators raised new safety concerns about one of the company's leads that are used with implantable defibrillators, analysts said.

A modest gain in International Business Machines helped the Dow outperform the other indexes. IBM rose 0.6 percent to $190.29.

Salesforce.com Inc jumped 8.8 percent to $158.78 after the business software provider beat Wall Street's expectations for the third quarter and maintained its outlook for the rest of the year.

But Deere & Co dragged on the S&P 500 after the world's largest farm equipment maker reported a weaker-than-expected quarterly profit. Its stock lost 3.7 percent to $82.83.

The market did not derive much direction from the day's economic data, with initial jobless claims falling last week, as expected.

Other data showed manufacturing picked up at its quickest pace in five months in November, while the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading for November showed the consumer sentiment index improved only slightly from the previous month.

The focus will likely turn to retailers on Friday as analysts try to assess how strong the holiday shopping season will be this year, according to Kurt Brunner, portfolio manager at Swarthmore Group in Philadelphia.

The S&P 500 retail sector index was up 0.6 percent.

Holiday shopping traditionally kicks off the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, as stores offer deals and discounts to lure consumers.

Advancers beat decliners by a ratio of about 2 to 1 on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.

Innovative Polymer Nanoparticles for Colorectal Cancer Treatment

The study was directed by Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Nicole H. Levi-Polyachenko, Ph.D., and done in collaboration with colleagues at the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials at Wake Forest University. This study was recently published online, ahead of print, in the journal, Macromolecular Bioscience (DOI: 10.1002/mabi.201200241).

Levi-Polyachenko and her team discovered a novel formulation that gives the polymers two important capabilities for medical applications: the polymers can be made into nanoparticles that are easily dispersed in water and generate a lot of heat when exposed to infrared light.

Results of this study showed that when colorectal cancer cells incubated with the PNs were exposed to five minutes of infrared light, the treatment killed up to 95 percent of cells. ?The results of this study demonstrate how new medical advancements are being developed from materials science research,? said Levi-Polyachenko.

The team made polymer nanoparticles and showed that they could undergo repeated cycles of heating and cooling without affecting their heating ability. This offers advantages over metal nanoparticles, which can melt during photothermal treatments, leading to a loss of heating efficiency. This also allows for subsequent treatments to target cells that are resistant to heat-induced killing.

A challenge with other electrically-conductive polymers that have recently been explored for photothermal therapy is that these other polymers absorb across a wide range of infrared light. Christopher M. MacNeill, Ph.D., post-doctoral researcher at Wake Forest and first author on the paper, noted that, ?we have specifically used electrically-conductive polymers designed to absorb a very narrow region of infrared light, and have also developed small, 50-65nm, polymer nanoparticles in order to optimize both biological transport as well as heat transfer.? For example, 50nm is about 2000 times smaller than a human hair.

In addition, the new PNs are organic and did not show any evidence of toxicity, alleviating concerns about the effect of nanoparticles that may potentially linger in the body.

?There is a lot more research that needs to be done so that these new nanoparticles can be used safely in patients,? Levi-Polyachenko cautioned, ?but the field of electrically-conductive polymers is broad and offers many opportunities to develop safe, organic nanoparticles for generating heat locally in a tissue. We are very enthusiastic about future medical applications using these new nanoparticles, including an alternative approach for treating colorectal cancer.?

The study was funded by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

We are very scared - World News - MSNBC.com

Magdi Youssef / NBC News

Dalia al Sayed, host of a cooking show on Egypt TV, told NBC News that she was afraid that the conflict between Israel and Gaza would hurt Egypt.

By Charlene Gubash, NBC News

CAIRO, Egypt - Sympathy for the Palestinians runs high in neighboring Egypt as Israel reportedly considers a ground invasion of Gaza if peace efforts fail.

The country, which is led by Hamas' parent movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, has been spearheading efforts to forge a ceasefire between Gaza and Israel. President Mohammed Morsi has hosted leaders from Hamas and two key allies, Qatar and Turkey, to seek a way to end the fighting.

Morsi, who came to power earlier this year after a popular revolt ousted longtime American ally President Hosni Mubarak, also recalled Cairo's ambassador from Israel to protest the offensive.

But while the government?s stance reflects the will of many regular Egyptians who support the Palestinian struggle against what is widely viewed here as Israeli aggression, those who spoke to NBC News in the capital, Cairo,?also worry that Morsi will drag them into conflict with their powerful neighbor.?

?We are very scared of what is happening. ?We have been through war,? said Dalia al Sayed, host of a cooking show on Egypt TV told NBC News.? ?Let the Palestinians unite, not drag Egypt in to start wars.?

Despite talks of a truce, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continue, with a Hamas-linked bank being hit overnight along with 10 homes of alleged Palestinian militants. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Al Sayed's family knows the price of war. ?She was born in Suez during the 1967 war between Israel and Syria, Egypt and Jordan?during which?her family were forced to flee. ?Al Sayed believes that President Mohamed Morsi's government is trying to distract Egyptians from problems at home. ?

"The [2011 Egyptian] revolution was not done in order to take money, resources and give them to Gaza,? she said. ?Egypt is suffering. ?People can't find food to eat. ?Its not up to Egypt to get involved." ??

Businessman Mohamed Abdel Aziz is happy to see Morsi adopt a policy independent from United States, Israel?s main backer, but worries that Washington may cut Egypt's annual $2.1 billion aid package.

He, like others, said that the government should concentrate on Egypt?s own problems, like worsening security, the high cost of living and rising unemployment.

The violence continues in Gaza while negotiations between Hamas and Israel are taking place in Egypt. An estimated 100 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed so far. NBC's John Ray reports.

"We can't always say ?Yes, yes, yes [to the U.S.].? I like the response but I am afraid of the results,? Aziz said. ??If you don't have control of feeding your people, you can't control your decision making. ?Morsi took the decision. He will bear the consequences."?

Nevertheless, there are those who would favor Morsi breaking more dramatically with the United States and Israel.

At a poorly attended demonstration held by the Muslim Brotherhood after Friday prayers at Egypt?s iconic Al Azhar Mosque, emotions ran high in favor of Egyptian intervention.?

Sami Abdel Halim Haidar, a daily laborer in Cairo, said he came to stand in solidarity with Gazans.?

?Yesterday, I saw a baby killed.? What religion, what law, what country is ok with that?? he told NBC News, adding that the border with Gaza should be left open for anybody who wants to wage holy war against Israel.? ?I want to cut relations with any country that stands by Israel or supplies them with weapons.?

?It?s very easy to condemn the actions of Israel and issue a U.N. statement, but we need to make decisions that show how we have changed and are not following the U.S. or Israel anymore,? he said.

Magdi Youssef / NBC News

Khalid Kamal attends a protest against Israeli bombardment of Gaza at Al Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday.

Khalid Kamal, a bearded man dressed in the simple white gown and head covering preferred by Islamist fundamentalists, said he wanted to tell Israel that the violence in Gaza so far was minor compared to what it could be.?

?[Israel and the United States]?are provoking us to perform Jihad and we are ready for our blood to be spilled at the gate of the holy city [Jerusalem],? he said.

But veteran publisher and opposition activist, Hisham Kassem, said that if Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood truly cared about the Palestinian people they would encourage Hamas to stop firing rockets across the border.

?It is the citizens who bear the brunt,? he told NBC News.? ?People are saying the last thing we want Morsi to do is take us into war." ?

Kassem worried that Morsi has played all his diplomatic cards too early.

?He sent his Prime Minister to Gaza and withdrew the Egyptian ambassador.? Suppose Israel enters Gaza, what does he have next???

Taha Belal, NBC News, contributed to this report.

Online Reputation Management - Business 2 Community

Patients are looking at you more closely than ever before. Are you sure they?re looking at the right information? I continually harp on the importance of online reputation management (ORM) for that very reason ? it?s important. Oh, and most of you who haven?t done anything proactive have incorrect information floating around the internet getting into patient?s hands ? be that the wrong office address or phone number or unwarranted negative reviews, they are out there and their importance is growing.

Several months back I was a featured speaker at the?2012 Bones Society of Florida Annual Meeting?speaking on this very topic and how it can impact your practice. Among other things, I presented what your office can do today to claim some of your most important profiles and why taking an active role in your ORM matters. Here are some statistics to consider:

  • More than 100 million people choose HealthGrades.com to find out more about their doctor prior to an appointment and rate them following an appointment
  • The rating show prominently on Google, which averages 170,000,000 unique visitors each month
  • More than 74 percent of searches are related to small businesses (like your office)
  • 92 percent of buyers regularly check reviews online before making a purchase or service decision

Now that you know some of the reasons it matters, you may be asking yourself what exactly all of this means to your practice. Let?s explain in a bit more detail. What is Online Reputation Management? Essentially, ORM is the process of monitoring the Internet reputation of a person, brand or business. In your case, acting as the physician and figurehead of your company, you act as all three.

Actively monitoring your online reputation involves claiming physician review site profiles and general review sites (such as HealthGrades.com, Vitals.com and Yelp.com) to ensure accuracy, respond to patient complaints, and using online feedback to influence future marketing and business decisions. A complete plan will also include inbound marketing strategies such as a content management system (CMS), video sharing and a comprehensive social media plan. In addition to just monitoring the review sites, the complete reputation bubble will use the CMS and social media aspects of the plan to drive content to your site, position you better on Google and create a loyal online following ? all of which is designed to put more patients in your waiting room.?In essence, by fostering an environment for positive reviews and accurate information online, a complete ORM will leverage and focus all of your efforts to help your bottom line while simultaneously keeping your name out of the mud.

Do Patients Really Use These Sites?

Yes, they most certainly do. As stated above, the number of patients using the review sites and basing their opinions off of what is found there is continuing to trend upward. Unfortunately, there is no real way to know how many patients look at your profile and decide not to pick up the phone based on what they find there. However, by adding something as simple as ?How Did You Hear About Us?? to your new patient paperwork, you may be able to identify if patients are coming to you because of your online reputation ? don?t scoff at the idea, we?ve seen it with some of our clients. In fact, we?ve had a few patients tell us that they?ve decided to have surgery with some of our clients strictly because of an online video piece they saw about the doctor we shared on YouTube.

And, on the flipside of the spectrum, we?ve seen with clients where a hospital actually gained access to their physician rating profiles and changed all of the ?Call for an Appointment? numbers directly to the hospital?s. We choose not to think about the number of potential appointments lost because of the inaccuracy. The bottom line is that this stuff works and if you aren?t taking advantage of it, frankly, you?re missing the boat.

What Do I Do?

I?ve heard it all before ? yes, I know it takes a lot of time to do and it?s relatively new and unstable ground to tread. But the fact of the matter is that if you aren?t, your competition down the street is. My recommendation is to set aside some time this weekend or at the end of the night and just educate yourself a bit on the topic. See what?s out there, find where your name pops up and read what people are saying about your office. You may be surprised at the results. Then, schedule a little time each week to tackle each site until you systematically make your way through the largest, most visible sites.

At that point, it would be a good idea to consider writing some custom content for your website, scheduling social media posts and filming a few quick videos to educate patients about who you are and what you do. If that proves to be too much to chew, consider dividing the responsibilities among your staff or hiring a specialist. It?s a new world of marketing out there; make sure you?re a part of it.

Let me know if you?d like a copy of my slideshow presentation from the 2012 BSOF Annual Meeting ? including the steps your office can take to claim some of your most vital online physician profiles. ?If so, email me at jennifer@insightmg.com.
